Woodworking

Purpose

The purpose of these classes is to introduce students to the worlds of woodworking.  In the course of these classes I hope to do the following:

  1. Teach students how to safely and effectively work with hand and power tools.
  2. Foster a love of woodworking that will launch students into a new world of confidence and self reliance.
  3. Integrate other classroom topics (reading, writing, math, social studies, science etc…) that will serve to enrich not only the shop experience, but also other academic experiences as well.
  4. Have fun while learning a new skill set and way of life that will open many doors in the future.

 Objectives

  1. Safety, safety, safety!
  2. Gain confidence in tools, processes, and most importantly your self.
  3. Start with basic knowledge and skills that will be built upon in order to allow students the maximum amount of creativity, skills, and application.
  4. Improve writing and math skills

 Policies

  1. Students must be ready and prepared everyday to work in the classroom and the shop.
  2. Being a nontraditional class where there are safety concerns students will be held to a higher standard of behavior.  Not only do students need to abide by all school and classroom rules, they also have to abide to shop specific rules that are in place to ensure a safe, fun, and educational shop experience.
  3. Parents will need to review and sign a copy of the rules that will need to be returned to the teacher.  This will ensure that if any disciplinary action is taken the parents will understand the concerns and consequences of cretin behaviors.

 Grading

Students will be graded with the following criteria

  1. Daily grade; students will be given a daily grade from 0-10.  This grade will be determined by the student’s participation throughout class.
  2. Classroom work, problem of the day, assignments, and homework.
  3. Tests, quizzes, and skill tests
  4. Project grade; after completing each project students will be given a grade, points will be awarded with a grading rubric.

Projects and rubric must be completed to earn a grade, if either are not completed it will be recorded as a zero!

 Woodworking Fees

Students will be carded the below amounts for their projects.  Paying for supplies is not optional and students will not be able to start working on their projects until their fees have been paid.  After fees are paid students will be given a supply pack that will contain all the materials required to complete their project.  If a student runs out of materials before they complete the project, they can either get supplies from the scrap box or they can purchase more at the following prices.

1 board foot of lumber $1

Screws/nails $0.01 each

Biscuits $0.05 each

Distributing supplies in this manner will hopefully make the students more aware and responsible for their materials, reduce waste and encourage a higher level of quality and craftsmanship.
